  • Celebrating our June Candle of the Month: Flavorful Recipes for Iced Tea

    There’s nothing like a cold glass of old-fashioned southern iced tea during the hot summer months.  Not only is it a refreshing beverage, but tea is also loaded with tons of healthy antioxidants (the same ones found in red wine) and helps fight cancer and heart disease.  In fact, we love sweet tea so much that we named our Sweet Tea New Kitchen Collection candle as our June Candle of the Month!  So in honor of our favorite summer drink, we’ve provided helpful tips to making the perfect batch as well as delicious recipes to add a little extra flavor.  Enjoy!

    Easy Steps to Brewing Iced Tea

    1. Place 3-5 tea bags into 2 cups of boiling water.
    2. Steep black tea for 5 minutes and green tea for 2-3 minutes. Remove tea bags after allotted time.
    3. Pour the concentrated tea into a pitcher and add 2 cups water.
    4. Before chilling, let tea sit to room temperature to avoid clouding.
    5. To sweeten your iced tea, add you can add granulated sugar until it dissolves (this only works when the tea is hot!).  If the tea is cold, add simple syrup or try a flavored syrup (see recipes below) and stir until the syrup is dissolved.

    Simple Syrup

    Combine ¾ cup water with ¾ sugar in a saucepan and bring to a boil.  Stir until sugar is completely dissolved. Yields 1 cup (serving size 1 tablespoon)

    Fresh Peach Syrup

    Mash 1 cup peeled, ripe peach in a bowl.  Add hot simple syrup to peaches and let sit for 30 minutes.  Strain the mixture through a sieve and discard solids.

    Mint-Lime Syrup

    Place ¼ cup chopped, fresh mint leaves and 3 (2-inch) strips of lime in a small bowl.  Add hot simple syrup, cover, and let sit for 30 minutes.  Strain the mixture through a sieve and discard solids.

    Raspberry-Chambord Syrup

    Place 1 cup fresh raspberries in a small bowl and mash with a fork.  Add hot simple syrup and 2 tablespoons of Chambord.  Cover and let sit for 30 minutes.  Strain mixture through a sieve and discard solids.

    Lavender Syrup

    Rinse 1 tablespoon dried lavender buds (stems removed) under cold water, and place in a small bowl.  Add hot simple syrup, cover, and let sit for 30 minutes.  Strain mixture through a sieve and discard solids.

    Cucumber-Ginger Syrup

    Place ½ cup grated, peeled cucumber in a small bowl with 5 (¼ inch) pieces of peeled, fresh ginger.  Add hot simple syrup, cover and let stand 30 minutes.  Strain mixture through a sieve and discard solids.
